The Liquid Crystal Project – Ghetto

J Rawls & company are back at it with the third installment of their Liquid Crystal Project releases, due out April 10th. And with that, here goes the first preview.

Like previous Liquid Crystal albums, LCP3 explores sounds, beats, & rhythms with jazz instrumentation alongside an undeniable Hip-Hop influence. Tributes to De La Soul & A Tribe Called Quest highlight the seamless genre-hopping, which mixes elements of Jazz, Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, & even Downtempo. “This time we expanded our sound using more musical interpretation & more vibrant sounds,” explains Rawls. With all four members back, plus a special appearance by onetime George Duke & Ramsey Lewis trumpeter Pharez Whitted, The Liquid Crystal Project 3 is a smooth-like-butter musical experience that defies classification. As Rawls puts it: “It’s just satisfactory music.”

A.Dd+ – Can’t You See

Something new from the Dallas-duo that will end up living on Austin DJ/producer Nick Nack’s upcoming album, State Machine.

“What’s absorbing approximately this song,” notes Slim Gravy, “was that I had written my verse & the hook without even telling Paris the concept, & his verse ended up matching perfectly.” And that concept, according to Paris, is, “the weight of petty issues & people, & how they can shape your perspective on life in a given moment.” The gist of the song, a melancholy track built around Nick Nack’s slowed, guitar-laden beat, is summed up in one succinct bar from Paris’ verse, when he raps, “The success turned me to anti-social socialite.”

Aleon Craft – My Girlfriend f. Grip Plyaz & Tuki Carter (Video)

Directed by Chilly-O.

Rashid Hadee – The All f. Augustine (Video)

Directed by Rookie of Rookie Films.

Fifth visual single off the Chi-town emcee’s Aural Sex: The Search For Pinky Tuscadero.

Ever wonder what happens when a young lady tries to “play you,” then turn around & attempt to go out with you? Well, in the humorously twisted mind of Rashid Hadee, you find out exactly what happens. He & Augustine are not the ones to try & run game on, or you might have to tell your incoming calls you’re a little “tied up” at the moment. As serious as Rashid Hadee may try & look in his situation, it’s obvious he’s poking pleasant at the idea of what one may think of doing when a young lady tries to play them for the fool. In a day & age when most artists are taking themselves way too serious, its refreshing to see an artist inject a little humor into their visuals, even if its dry/shocking humor. The All is just approximately the mid point of brother Hadee’s Search For Pinky Tuscadero aka Ms. right. Welcome to another episode of Aural Sex theatre.

Apple Juice Kid – Beats & Poetic Portraits of a Revolution

Inspired by the uprisings in Tunsia & Egypt, Apple Juice Kid teamed up with Empowerment Project to provide the score to their Poetic Portraits of a Revolution piece.

Poetic Portraits of a Revolution is a work produced by the Academy Award-winning documentary film organization Empowerment Project, who “sent three poets & a photographer/videographer to Egypt & Tunisia in the summer of 2011 to document people’s stories approximately the popular uprisings in both countries through their art.”

The project is presented in three forms: a theatrical performance, a poetic album featuring verses from Kane Smego, Will Mcinerney & Mohammad Moussa, as well as a collection of original beats by Apple Juice Kid (previous producer for Wale, Mos Def, Camp Lo).

North Carolina: the theatrical performance of Poetic Portraits of a Revolution is debuting this week at the Carrboro Arts Center, catch it there & on its national tour this fall!

2DBZxSXSW: The Dopehouse

For those unaware SXSW begins begins this Friday, March 9th, & ends Sunday, March 18th, & there’s going to be a variety of showcases, concerts, exhibitions, meet-and-greets, galleries, screenings, tastings & virtually every other form of sensory decadence. While the purveyors of this corner of the Internets have only been for the past few years, each year has seemingly gotten bigger (and more “shark-jump” worthy, yet that’s neither here nor there), this may be the largest one thus far.

As such, instead of putting together our own “Internets rap showcase” we’ve decided to buck the trend & do something that is more relaxing (read: much easier to pull out of our asses): The Dopehouse.

The Dopehouse will be an RSVP-free, free entry free-for-all for any & every partygoer, fan, friend, musician, manager, handler, bag handler, weed bag handler & the like who wants to enjoy satisfactory music courtesy of six deejays from all over North America (some who have weekly mix shows on terrestrial radio, others who spin for the likes of Skeme & Talib Kweli), down cheap drinks (like, extremely cheap) & most importantly party.

But wait, there’s more.

There will be a photobooth courtesy of Floridian director UnkleLuc, as well as giveaways from the likes of Orisue, IM KING, FLüD, Rocksmith, Young & Reckless & Akomplice. And if you still aren’t convinced that a two-night, free party with cheap drinks & free giveaways aren’t for you, well… kill yourself.

The Dopehouse. See you mudda suckas there.

Killa Kyleon – Syrup City

The first (and so far, only) time I tried syrup was during last year’s SXSW. I was approximately to DJ a concert with J*DaVeY, Stalley & Pac Div, & Dee Goodz slid me a cup of what I thought was just Sprite. Yeah, never again. Kyleon’s T.R.I.L.L. is coming soon.

Marky – The Road To Divine Intervention (Preview)

“…Two roads diverged in a wood, & I— I took the one less traveled by, & that has made all the difference.” excerpt from “The Road Not Taken” -Robert Frost

I firmly believe that we all walk our own predestined paths thru life & that once in a tremendous while, there are certain divine interventions that alter our paths for better & for worse. Me? I’m no different. I’ve had my luck & I’ve had my struggles too. The road that I’ve traveled on hadn’t always been the easiest & I’ve had to make some complex decisions in the past to keep true to who I am. But life goes on & now? It’s time to let go of the “old Marky” & start fresh with the “new”.

Divine Intervention drops March 14th.
