Chris Rivers – Wonderland Of Misery 2

Chris Rivers – Wonderland Of Misery 2
Chris Rivers - Wonderland Of Misery
After this art, nowhere to go but up.

I plan to keep this short. First, the facts:

  • Chris Rivers is the song of Big Pun
  • Big Pun is my favorite latino emcee, and probably resides in my all-time top 10 or 15
  • Chris Rivers raps, really well, but not as good as his dad, yet

I caught on to Wonderland of Misery 2 after a freestyle and then a google search that led to this song:

Sorry but I don’t remember where I saw that freestyle so I don’t have a link for it. Anyway, Wonderland of Misery 2 is Chris’ “mixtape” from mid 2014. Those quotes are there because most of the instrumentals seem to be original, and most of the songs are structured like regular songs with hooks and a couple verses and such. So this is more of a “street album” than mixtape. The beats are decent, but rarely are they very compelling in their own right. Their usual style is what you might expect from a 2010s era East Cost gangsta emcee, with very short forays into R&B influences, and even a reggae song that I don’t care for. In terms of overall quality, about half of the best songs use jacked beats, so maybe Chris’ biggest problem is the beats he has available?

Actually, I know what Chris’ biggest problem is: his songwriting, which may or may not be influenced by his beats choices. Being Big Pun’s son, he has a LOT of work to do in order to make it out from underneath his dad’s shadow. And, being a new-ish emcee, much of that work isn’t completed yet. But he is already a genuinely dope emcee. He spits with a natural fire that commands attention and his rhyme schemes are always absorbing because they’re complex and varied. But something is off. He’s noticeably less articulate in conceptual songs than he is doing braggadocio, sometimes relying on cliches or forming sentences awkwardly. His hook choices are pretty much always terrible (and usually voiced by some uncredited partner of his.) A lot of his songs feel like collections of random verses instead of being centered on one theme. And, finally, instead of putting out 10-14 good songs, this mixtape is 27 tracks that are sometimes very meh, with only a couple skits. In short, in my opinion, a lot of offensive choices were made.

In Chris’ defense, some tremendous songs came out of his seemingly-haphazard creation process. The above-embedded The Myth and the Omen, featuring Style P, is tremendous as a display of the storytelling skills that Chris will likely hone in the future. Styles’ vague rhymes muddy the story of the reluctant criminal and his hardened mentor, but Chris’ verses make the theme clear and the song worth paying full attention to. I Know You Hate Me is another tremendous song with a theme, this time Chris’ thoughts on his self-esteem and other people’s feelings about him. It’s my favorite track of the whole album/mixtape, and is made even more real by The Destroyer Skit, where he  describes his lifelong battle with depression. In terms of raw rhyming skills, Heatwave, Asking, and Toe 2 Toe (Chris on The Roots’ Clones beat and Corey Gunz on Mobb Deep’s G.O.D. Father Pt 3) are all good displays of what Chris has to offer.

Sadly, Wonderland of Misery 2 plays like a demo that went on way too long. Chris Rivers clearly has a bright future ahead, but there’s no need for all these songs to be released just to prove that fact. They actually injure his case, making his good songs seem like lucky flukes. He clearly can smash the mic, and he’s proved that he can make songs with meaning. Now I just need him to do those things, and only those things, for a whole release.

2/5

Irv Gotti Addresses ‘Romantic Relationship’ With Ashanti

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

The INC is back. Murder Inc.’s honcho Irv Gotti and rapper Ja Rule (fresh out of prison) recently visited Power 105’s The Breakfast Club and cleared up several rumors including the longstanding assumption that Gotti and singer Ashanti were a romantic pair.

“Here’s the real…Me and Ashanti have a unique and special bond. Okay? We made tremendous music together…No, we didn’t have sex. I NEVER slept with Ashanti,” said the then-married Irv about his then-signee. “Let me tell you about our relationship! Listen, we at Murder Inc. is like a family. What happened when I fell upon hard times, certain people bailed. She bailed…. She didn’t wanna be a part of Murder Inc. no more. She’s this princess that I created and the ‘Murder’ wasn’t good for the image anymore.”

Irv says that he “did offensive things” with other women but overall, he’s a good husband. “She has a tremendous life,” he says about his ex-wife Deb. “When we talk about these relationships…a lot of people don’t work out. When you look at the end of it, she’s in a better place. She has a tremendous life.”

Ja is also in a forgiving mood. He says after coming home from jail he, “doesn’t have no problems” with anybody including longtime foe 50 Cent. “I read the Bible a little bit,” he says about his jail time. “For me, I don’t want to resent anything that happened…I just want to move forward.”

Enrique Iglesias: ‘Heart Attack’ Single Premiere!

After scoring another dance hit with “Turn the Night Up,” Enrique Iglesias officially premieres his new single titled “Heart Attack“! The track serves as the second official U.S. single off his upcoming tenth studio album, which is scheduled for release this Fall via Universal Republic Records. Produced by The Cataracs, “Heart Attack” is a thrilling pop number blending soulful piano and a hot dubstep breakdown with Enrique‘s seductive Latin pop sensibilities. It’s an infectious and intoxicating concoction of styles that sounds new while still staying true to Enrique‘s signature sound. I’m really feeling this one! What do you guys think?

Enrique Iglesias will release his new single “Heart Attack” on Tuesday (October 15)!

Drake Explains Why He Was Rejected From Miami Heat Locker Room

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Being rejected at the door to a party doesn’t faze Drake. The superstar rapper explained why he was denied from entering the Miami Heat locker room this summer after the team’s championship victory.

He told HQ on ESPN that he was just joking around by entering the media entrance to celebrate the Heats’ win. “As I joke, I tried to go in with the media through the media entrance.”

He continued, “That was a tremendous night, one of the greatest nights of my life. But that was probably the highlight, was getting denied by that old man and it making news everywhere. ..That’s a classic moment. I’m allowed to go in the Heat locker room for the most part, but I just tried to do it in a comical way. It didn’t work out for me, I’ll never do it again.”

The easygoing artist then threw in a little jab at the security guard who refused him. “It’s good to know that that [security] man is doing his job,” Drake continued. “Some things are sacred, for example, like the Heat locker room on the night of the NBA Finals. Not anybody should be able to walk in there, and he clearly knows zero Drake songs. I don’t blame him, he was like 89 years old. I understand, hats off to that gentleman who was doing due diligence as security.”

Rock The Bells Cancels Festival Dates

rtb_cancelled

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

The annual Rock the Bells Festival has cancelled its New York and Washington, D.C. shows after completing its West Coast run.

Radio.com shares that poor ticket sales caused the concert organizers to cancel the festival, which included headliners like J. Cole and Black Hippy.

Chang Weisberg, festival founder shared in a statement: “First and foremost, it is with tremendous sadness and disappointment that we must cancel the Washington, DC and New York City Rock the Bells dates due to lack of ticket sales. I, along with our staff, the artists, and all of the sponsors, media partners, local promoters, and radio stations involved are thankful for our supporters and the fans that planned on attending. It’s extremely unfortunate that we can’t complete the last half of the 10th Anniversary Rock the Bells tour. We did everything in our power to save the show. Unfortunately, the financial loss would have been devastating. This festival has been ten years in the making. I am truly sorry we could not produce the show for all the fans who did buy their ticket in support of.”

Weisberg also added that low ticket sales may have been caused from competition by other shows from Jay-Z, Kanye and Kendrick Lamar. “There are a lot of high-profile hip-hop tours on the road right now, so maybe the market’s saturated…For hip-hop, this is the busiest season I’ve ever seen. I wish everybody well.”
